Is 15-40 "C" grade HD oil OK for older tractors, a Ford 4000 in this case. These oils didn't exist when the manuals were printed and they advise straight weights. I live in northern Idaho and do occasional summer road work but mostly I do snow removal. My summer use is only about 20 hours so it seems a waste for me to put 30 weight in for that little use, then chaage to 10W for winter.I would also like to add 2 quarts of straight 10W to 5 quarts of the 15-40W to "thin" it out a bit. Is this mixing OK? I havn't seen any 10-30W "C" HD oils for sale, only 15-40W. Thnaks.

Robert,As you mentioned, straight weight oils were used/recommended and printed because multi-vis oils didn't exist. It is probably true that they were designed around this. IMHO, you "Might" be doing your tractor a favor. Because a multi-vis is thinner at start-up, thus reducing wear and quicker oil pressure. On the other hand, a thinner oil may cause new leaks or "burn" a little oil never seen before. Remember: Thinner the oil,tighter the seals need to be. NEVER thin oil by mixing weights!, straight or multi. This is a big NO-NO. It is ok to mix Petro and Synthetics of the same weight. If you are using a straight 30W, even going to 15-40 is half of what you had before. My 98' Cummins only calls for something lower than a 15-40 below 20. Then it recommends a 5-30 synthetic. If it wasn't an old tractor I would tell you to head for 15-40 synthetic. and forget about the block heaters needed when using a petro based oil. Probably not a good idea in your situation. ....

I forgot to say, I would go for a decent petro based 15-40 in your shoes. ....

my family farm has used 15w40 engine oil in ourolder model equipment for years without any problems. ....

I've never seen a problem I could attribute to mixing oils, and at my shop I probably looked into hundreds of motors. I mix oils of various brands and viscosities without even thinking about it, and have never had a problem. I commonly get better life out of my engine/trannys than most people expect. Lots of things affect engine life, with luck and cleanliness being at the top. Roger Loving ....
